Any comparisons of results to actual patients, is completely incidental. All data included in no way represents an actual patient. Before breath testing, it is recommended that patients avoid use of antibiotics for 4 weeks and avoid promotility agents and laxatives for at least 1 week. Glucose is a sugar that will be broken down by bacteria (if present). The fluid is removed and tested to find the kind and number of bacteria it. Breath testing, specifically with glucose hydrogen or lactulose hydrogen, is suggested in symptomatic patients for the diagnosis of small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO). This is a test for bacterial overgrowth, or intolerance to lactose, fructose, or sucrose. A rapid rise in exhaled hydrogen or methane possibly indicates bacterial overgrowth in your small intestine. A fluid culture is used to take a sample of your small bowel fluid. Breath test for SIBO This is a non-invasive test that measures the amount of hydrogen or methane that you exhale after drinking a mixture of glucose and water, or lactulose. Your body will get rid of them through your breath. Any hydrogen producing bacteria present will digest the lactulose and produce hydrogen which can be detected in the breath. These are given off as bacteria break down carbs. It is useful as part of routine diagnostic. A breath test may be used to check for signs of too many bacteria, such as hydrogen and methane gas. Biomarkers, references ranges, results, and all other data may differ from actual reports. A hydrogen and methane breath test is a valuable diagnostic tool to accurately predict FODMAP intolerance and SIBO. Hydrogen breath tests help to diagnose either intolerance to sugars or small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO).
